Kenya is a paradise for bird watchers, with over 1080-recorded bird’s species to be observed in their different habitats. Flamingoes pelicans and storks are in abundance on the lakes, while birds of prey (smaller and bigger) are to be observed widely North and South of the equator. Although many of the birds are brightly colored and exotic looking, they are generally quite easily recognized; within a day or two you will be identifying the various species with ease. Their main habitats include water, open plains, woodlands and farmlands. Met at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta international airport by our tour manager, briefed on your safari and then drive to Lake Naivasha having a stopover at view point to view the magnificent Gregory Rift Valley. View birds that inhabit Lake Naivasha, the highest rift valley lake in Kenya. The lake has over 350 species of birds. Look for flocks of cormorants, kingfishers, and pelicans among other species of birds. As a better option, take a boat ride as you watch the birds. Dinner and overnight at Lake Naivasha Kongoni Lodge.
After breakfast, start your Lake Nakuru Game Drive on the Floor of the Rift-Valley; here we will see the spectacular gathering of lesser Flamingoes in their hundreds of thousand together with an abundance of other water birds like the Western Reef Heron, Lesser Jacana, and black-headed Gull. We will also look for Acacia forest species, including Green-wood Hoopoe, Hildebrandt’s and Coqui Francolins, Rufous-naped and Fawn-colored Larks, scarce Grey-crowned Helmet-shrike, Arrow-marked Babbler, Bearded Woodpecker, Mottled swift and White-shouldered Cliff Chat. On the baboon cliff we shall be on the lookout for fox Kestrels and other species of falcons. Dinner and overnight at Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge or Lake Nakuru Woodlands Lodge on full board basis.
Early morning breakfast, followed by full day game viewing and bird-watching. Lake Nakuru national park is a world well known habitat for birds as flamingo’s flock here in thousands feeding on crustaceans and small animals that inhabit the lake as well as the algae. The flamingoes are accompanied by other species of birds including the gregarious white pelicans ’fishing’, geese, jacanas, secretary birds, fish eagles and the vulturine fowls found in the bushy and forest parts of the park among other birds. Lunch, dinner and overnight at the Lake Nakuru Woodlands lodge.
Have an early game viewing, followed breakfast. Mid-morning at leisure. Have lunch and drive to Lake Baringo. Lake Baringo is one of the flesh water lakes on the floor of Kenya Rift Valley. Watch out for the red bishop, the solitary pink backed pelicans, fish eagles among other bird.
Lake Baringo and Lake Bogoria
From Lake Nakuru we head North-west towards the fresh water Lake Baringo, with a stopover near the Menengai crater and here, we find the Brown Parisoma and Brown Snake-Eagle in these farm lands. At Lake Baringo and its environs, we search for rare species restricted to the north-western part of the country including Hemprich’s and Jackson’s Hornbills, Heuglin’s Courser, Nubian Nightjar, Brown-tailed Rock Chat, Northern Grey Tit, Gambaga flycatcher, Mouse-coloured Penduline Tit, Beautiful Sunbird, Bristle-crowned Starling, Jackson’s Golden-backed, Little and Northern Masked Weavers. In the evening we visit several sites looking for Verreaux’s and Spotted-Eagle Owls, as well as the White-faced Scops Owl. Dinner and overnight at Lake Baringo country club.
After breakfast, have a full day birding activities as Lake Baringo has a multitude of birds. 400 species have been recorded here. Have an experience of bird watching on foot or by boat. Have lunch at the country club. Dinner and overnight at Lake Baringo Country Club.
Lake Baringo Island
Lake Bogoria National Reserve has more than 350 birds on its list, but the main attraction is an estimated two million lesser flamingos which flock in the shallow waters feeding on algae. Mixed in are many greater flamingos as well. Lake Bogoria is one of the best places in Kenya to see large flocks of these birds. Plenty of other waterbirds are easy to spot, and the call of a fish eagle is never far off.
Lake Baringo is a real birding heaven offering excellent birding opportunities in the Kenya, Lake Baringo is a stunning soda lake dotted with steam jets, natural hot springs and geysers. The lake is famously famous for over 2 million flamingos that have been recorded at the shores to thrill while on Kenya Safaris.
Travel to Kakamega after breakfast and sight see en route. Lunch en route. Check in at Rondo Retreat in Kakamega forest. Dinner and overnight at Rondo Retreat Resort.
Kakamega Forest is an eastern extension of the great Congo Basin rainforest. It is one of Africa’s most famous birding forests, and it supports over 80 species on the eastern limit of their range from central and West Africa. Examples of this are the spectacular great blue turaco and the colorful blue-headed bee-eater. More than 350 bird species have been recorded, 36 of which are endemic to the forest and can only be found here.
Kakamega Forest used to be part of the ancient Guineo-Congolian forest, which was once a great tropical rainforest that stretched all across Central Africa. The birds are spectacular, where if you’re a birder visiting Kenya, a birding tour at Kakamega Forest is a must!
Time truly has stood still for Kakamega Forest, a remnant of a remnant of the Guineo-Congolian Equatorial forest that stretched across all of Central Africa. This wonderful forest is home many mammals including Bush Pig, Giant Forest Hedgehog, Colobus monkey, Debrazza Monkey and Pottos, among other; but of course, it’s most famed for it’s beautiful array of birdlife. Some of the birds to be seen here include the Blue-headed Bee-eater, Ross’s Turaco, Turner’s Eremomela and also the endangered (due to the illegal pet trade) Grey Parrot. It’s also home to the gorgeous Great Blue Turaco. You definitely won’t be forgetting this ancient place in a hurry.
After breakfast, have full day birding activity at Kakamega forest with a picnic lunch. The forest is well known for diversity of birds. There are 367 species of birds that have been recorded here.
Kakamega Forest
In this Western part of Kenya, the remnant Congolese rainforest has species which are found nowhere else in Kenya. This includes Blue-headed Bee-eater, African Broadbill Toro Olive, and Shelley’s Greenbuls, Grey-throated Barbet, Chapin’s flycatcher, Black-faced Rofous Warbler, Veillot’s Black Weaver, Uganda Woodland Warbler Mackinnon’s Fiscal, Chubb’s Cisticola, Brown-throated Wattle-eye among others. We will venture further field outside the forest for some more western specialties like Rock Pratincole, White-chinned Prinia, Marsh Widowbird, Black Bishop, Red-headed Lovebird, Green Crombec, Red-chested Sunbird, Purple Starling, Locust Finch, Zebra Waxbill, Brown Twinspot, Bar-breasted Fire finch and be on the lookout for rare Speckled-breasted Woodpecker and Bedouin Snake-eagle. Bird species found around Lake Victoria but rarely if ever seen anywhere else in Kenya include the Blue-breasted Bee-eater, Blue Swallow, Swamp Flycatcher, Greater Swamp-warbler, White-winged Warbler, Papyrus Yellow Warbler, Caruthers’ Cisticola, Papyrus Gonolek, Red-chested Sunbird, Red-headed Quelea, Slender-billed Weaver, Yellow-backed Weaver, Northern Brown-throated Weaver, Black-throated Seedeater and the Papyrus Canary. Early morning birding at the arboretum, drive to Nairobi lunch en route. Check in Nairobi hotel for your dinner and overnight or be taken to the airport to catch your flight back home.
Set in one hundred and fifty acres of grassland studded with Acacia bushes and trees, the resort is not only home to our resident giraffe, waterbuck and both Vervet and Colobus monkeys, but it is also a night stop for the hippos when they leave the lake every night to come and trim the grass on our expansive lawns.
