Kenya has one of the richest avifauna’s in Africa with around 1090 bird species recorded. At least eight of these are national endemics. Around 170 species of Kenya’s birds species are Pale arctic migrants (11 species of them with a local breeding population too), mainly from eastern Europe, Russia, the middle East and Siberia. Another 60 species migrate regularly within the Afro tropics or from Madagascar. Some 335 species are found in forest; 230 species are entirely forest dependent and 110 species are “forest specialists” requiring intact, undisturbed habitat and Forty species of global conservation concern are known to occur in Kenya. Four of these are critically Endangered, two Endangered and 16 species are Vulnerable.

Nothing is more rewarding like encountering a group helmet’s shrikes on any birding trip in Kenya, they are beautiful birds with their unique crest signature mark. In Kenya, you can find four species of group; White-crested, Grey-crested, Chestnut-fronted and Retz’s Helmetshrike. Most of this species are gregarious and fly around in a group of 6 to around 50 individuals. More still, many species are always nesting during this period as it coincides with the breeding season. The spectacular Jackson’s widowbird is often seen from March to May.
This is a very exciting and also very comfortable holiday, featuring unforgettable wildlife and excellent supporting services. With an experienced Guide supported by top quality local guides, a carefully researched and planned itinerary, substantial, comfortable vehicles where everyone has a window seat, and excellent hotels and food throughout, we think this is the ideal Kenyan safari adventure both for birders and those with a general interest in African wildlife.

Later, we start heading back to Nairobi with more birding on the way. In the late afternoon, we shall arrive in Nairobi, marking the end to our Lake Naivasha Birding Tour.
