The Great Migration is an unforgettable natural event in Africa, in which millions of animals, mostly wildebeest and zebras, migrate north from Tanzania to Kenya. This event covers 2,900 kilometers (1,800 miles) in a large circle, and is known as a dangerous journey for the animals: an estimated 250,000 wildebeest die crossing rivers and from predator attacks along the way. For travelers looking to experience something truly unique, the Great Migration is a magical experience that can only be found on this scale in Kenya and Tanzania.

Wildebeest Migration Safari Tour Packages

Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park is where the Great Migration begins, from late December until July. From December to March, herds will be in northern Tanzania – visit during this time if you’d like to see newborn babies! Between April and May, the herds disperse north and west. This is a rainy period, so road conditions will be rough. In June, which is also mating season, the herds begin moving north once more, and by July they’ll have reached the Grumeti River.

July to November Africa Wildebeest Migration 2022 Tracker: Quiet Moments

While there is a chance you’ll spot the migration in the Mara even in early July to November, it is best to combine your visit with the Serengeti if you’re keen on viewing the migration. The Mara is quiet this month with the occasional thunderstorm and the hordes of tourists having mostly departed. November is a great month for those who wish to spend some quiet moments in the Mara. The rains are short and sweet, and great time to spot migrating birds.

Migration Forecast: When will the Africa Wildebeest Migration 2022 Tracker reach Kenya?

What actually happened: The migratory herds were spotted in Northern Serengeti by end-May and early-June. Some herds even crossed into the Masai Mara by mid-June itself. However, due to rains the larger herds lingered in Northern Serengeti till mid-July or so. It was only in August and September did we see the mega herds cross the Mara River.

June Africa Wildebeest Migration 2022 Tracker:

The migration has already begun! River crossings reported along the Mara River by June 10. Excellent sightings reported near Kogatende (Northern Serengeti). The large herds should flood the main Masai Mara Reserve by the end of the month. This is probably due to the fact that rains have been rather delayed in Kenya; short, new grass attracted the wildies.

May Africa Wildebeest Migration 2022 Tracker:

It seems that the migration will reach Northern Serengeti earlier than usual. Herds have already been spotted in the Western Corridor / Grumeti Reserves. We predict an earlier migration to the Mara as well this year, with the herds most likely entering the Mara by the first week of July.

Feb Africa Wildebeest Migration 2022 Tracker:

As of now, the migration seems on track as usual. The herds have reached Ndutu and the calving season has begun. If everything goes to schedule, we can expect the herds to reach Northern Serengeti (around Kogatende) by end-June / early-July 2022. The Mara river crossings should begin in July and the herds should cross into Kenya anytime mid-July onwards.

Where do the wildebeest migrate to and from?

The movement of the wildebeest is from Serengeti into Masai Mara and is dictated by factors such as the climate, pasture and mating and calving seasons. Keep in mind the wildebeest are migrating through the year in a generally clockwise direction covering vast areas reaching into Southern, Central and Western Serengeti before the year long trek brings them to Masai Mara around July to August. Their journey back to Serengeti happens around late October though this is less spectacular and more like a slow dispersal.

How do you see the Wildebeest Migration?

You can see the migration during a safari game drive in the Masai Mara Game reserve which is conducted in specialized vehicles driver by experienced Driver-Guides. As there are several core points where the wildebeest cross the rivers, it may be necessary to access and station oneself at these points during a day-long outing in the reserve as some of the lodges and camps can be up to an hour’s drive from the ideal vantage points.

Most tourists who come specially to see the migration consider seeing the river crossings a highlight of their tour and therefore want to spend enough time at these crossing points, which by the way tend to vary slightly every year while staying within a generally similar sub locality of the reserve. However, a BIG however, this schedule depends entirely on the long rains. If we see early or delayed long rains between March and May, we may see the schedule entirely change.
